“People’s ignorance can never be my internal reality.” International model Geena Rocero came out as a transgender woman during a 2014 TED Talk after 10 years of living in paranoia about the possibility of being outed while working in the fashion industry in New York City. “I don’t want to be tolerated, I want to thrive,” Rocero says about the journey to her ultimate truth. “There is nothing better than owning your story.” Rocero’s organization GenderProud is a global advocacy campaign for transgender rights. She says that 2015 was one of the most violent in the transgender community. Rocero calls for society to refocus its lens on the marginalized.
